Im vergangenen „Covid-Frühling“ begab Michael Heindl sich des Nachts mit der Kamera auf die Straßen Wiens. Sein Ziel: so viele Blicke wie möglich auf hinter den Fenstern sichtbare Fernsehgeräte zu werfen beziehungsweise auf das jeweils laufende Programm. Aus der riesigen Menge des gesammelten Materials montierte er schließlich in freier Assoziation ein Kaleidoskop von Film- und Fernsehbildern, die einem gerade durch dieses „Schlüsselloch“-Verfahren die Fragmentierung der modernen Medienwelt eindringlich vor Augen führen. It’s rather uncanny to watch the television screens in the private living spaces Michael Heindl filmed in Vienna during the pandemic in spring of 2020. They are always on and we are not sure anybody is watching. Only once does a person close a curtain and thus lock out the world. Behind the empty flickering, a dangerous narrative emerges, one that shows a world that has escaped into the realms of the private. Donald Trump, Rocky Balboa, shots of the Alps, it’s all the same, nobody really cares but that’s all there is.

Als täuschend einfache Studie unserer Wahrnehmung der Welt durch mediale Bilder zeigt uns dieser Film eine Reihe von Kästchen in größeren Kästchen – aus der Sicht eines Voyeurs. Die Geschichten, die durch die Fenster der Wiener Wohnungen über die Bildschirme flimmern, drehen sich um ihre eigenen angeblichen Wahrheiten, während eine größere Wahrheit irgendwo außerhalb des Blickfelds hartnäckig bestehen bleibt. Mit den Worten Gil Scott-Herons brisanter Funkhymne „The Revolution Will Not Be Televised“: „You will not be able to stay home, brother. A deceptively simple study of how we perceive our world through mediated images, this film shows us a series of boxes within boxes as seen through the eyes of a Peeping Tom. The stories on the TV screens filmed through the windows of Viennese apartment buildings revolve around their own alleged truths, while a larger reality persists somewhere out of view. To quote from Gil Scott-Heron’s galvanizing funk anthem The Revolution Will Not Be Televised: “You will not be able to stay home, brother. You will not be able to plug in, turn on and cop out.” The Jury Prize goes to Michael Heindl’s SPRING WILL NOT BE TELEVISED.
