Windshield Diamonds

Für die Arbeitsserie „Windshield Diamonds“ habe ich Insekten entlang von Straßen aufgesammelt, die von vorbeifahrenden Autos getötete wurden. Anschließend überzog ich die Tiere mit Splittern von Autoglas, die ich wiederum bei Unfallstellen gefunden habe.

 

Insekten prallen auf Windschutzscheiben und sterben – doch auch Scheiben können zu Bruch gehen. Durch die Zusammenführung dieser beiden Realitäten im Zustand ihrer Zerstörung, kann das Geschehene zwar nicht rückgängig gemacht werden. Was diese Endpunkte jedoch ermöglichen, sind das Aufgreifen und die Neuanordnung der verbliebenen Einzelteile. Durch die Art der Präsentation wird die gewohnte Vorrangstellung umgekehrt und die Hierarchie in Frage gestellt. Nicht der Mensch und sein Fahrzeug, sondern das Insekt wird ästhetisch und visuell erhöht und ins Zentrum gestellt.

For the body of work “Windshield Diamonds,” I collected insects along roadsides that had been killed by passing cars. I then coated the insects with fragments of car glass, which I in turn gathered from accident sites. 

 

Insects collide with windshields and die—but windshields, too, can shatter. By bringing these two realities together in a state of destruction, what has happened cannot be undone. What these endpoints do allow, however, is the retrieval and reconfiguration of the remaining fragments. Through the mode of presentation, the familiar hierarchy is inverted and called into question. It is not the human and their vehicle, but the insect that is aesthetically and visually elevated and placed at the center.
